The Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment stated that it planned to bring at least 5 million out of the estimated 6 million informal sector workers in Sri Lanka into the Sri Lanka Social Security Board (SLSSB) pension programme.

Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (27), Deputy subject Minister Wasantha Piyathissa noted that State sector employees are entitled to pensions, private sector workers receive Employees’ Provident Fund benefits and farmers are covered under the farmers’ pension scheme.

"In addition to those groups, there are nearly 6 million people engaged in informal employment. The SLSSB has enrolled around 3 million of them. However, only around 1.6 million members make regular payments at present. Our plan is to expand this pension coverage to at least 5 million informal sector workers."

The SLSSB recently stated that the “Surekuma” pension scheme remains open for individuals between the ages of 18 and 59 who are not entitled to Government pension benefits. Under the scheme, members are able to select pension plans according to their contribution capacity, with benefits including monthly pensions, disability coverage and funeral assistance. Contributions can also be made through flexible payment plans. Further information can be obtained through 011 288 6088 or via WhatsApp on 077 144 3044.
