The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to implement major infrastructure projects across State universities in Sri Lanka to improve the facilities afforded to students.
Sixteen project proposals have been submitted for the development of infrastructure facilities in State universities under the Higher Education Ministry. These proposals have been included in the Government’s ‘Investment Plan next year (2026) - 2030’ to be implemented after the recommendations of the National Planning Department. The projects are aligned with the specific requirements of each course: the construction and completion of a Professorial Unit for a Medical Faculty and providing equipment - estimated cost Rs. 3,594.14 million; providing hostel facilities for university students - estimated cost Rs. 26,625 million; the renovation of hostels in the Peradeniya University – estimated cost Rs. 2,452 million; the construction of a Wastewater Purification Unit for the Vavuniya University hostel - estimated cost Rs. 219 million; the construction and completion of a proposed building for the Business Studies Faculty of the Moratuwa University - estimated cost Rs. 1,309.42 million; the construction of a multi-purpose building for the Dental Health Sciences Faculty and the Allied Health Sciences Faculty of the Sri Jayewardenepura University - estimated cost Rs. 3,419.38 million; the expansion of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department building to accommodate the proposed Heavy Structures Engineering Laboratory and Coastal and Port Engineering Laboratory for the Engineering Faculty of the Ruhuna University - estimated cost Rs. 1,453.97 million; the construction of a Professorial Unit at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for the Health Sciences Faculty of the Eastern University - estimated cost Rs. 2,279 million; the upgrading of the cafeteria of the Applied Sciences Faculty of the Vavuniya University - estimated cost Rs. 64 million; the expansion of the student cafeteria complex of the Dental Hygiene Faculty of the Peradeniya University - estimated cost Rs. 100 million; the construction of a medical centre for the Vavuniya University - estimated cost Rs. 45 million; the construction of a two–storey building for the Vavuniya University - estimated cost Rs. 474 million; the construction of a building with laboratories, workshops and lecture halls for the Technology Faculty of the Uva Wellassa University - estimated cost Rs. 649.80 million; the construction of a laboratory complex for the Allied Health Sciences Faculty of the Peradeniya University - estimated cost Rs. 405 million; the construction of a laboratory for the Agriculture Faculty of the Ruhuna University – estimated cost Rs. 2,342 million; and the construction of a six–storey building for the Management Studies Faculty of the Open University - estimated cost Rs. 885.80 million.
