Poverty and mental health: Unravelling the complex connection

Poverty and mental health: Unravelling the complex connection

10 Dec 2023 | By Nuskiya Nasar

Poverty is a scourge that affects millions of people worldwide, hindering their access to basic needs such as food, shelter, education, and healthcare. Beyond the tangible consequences, poverty also has a profound impact on mental health. The connection between poverty and mental health is a complex web, intertwining various factors that exacerbate and perpetuate the cycle of poverty and mental distress.

The stress of financial insecurity

One of the primary ways in which poverty affects mental health is through increased stress levels. Individuals living in poverty are constantly burdened by financial insecurity, as they struggle to make ends meet. The persistent worry about how to afford necessities like food, clothing, and housing creates chronic stress, which takes a toll on mental well-being. The physiological and psychological effects of stress can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental disorders.

Limited access to healthcare and mental health services

Moreover, the lack of access to quality healthcare and mental health services further compounds the issue. Poverty often restricts individuals from seeking adequate medical care, including mental health treatment. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), less than 10% of people in low-income countries with mental health conditions receive the necessary treatment. This treatment gap only exacerbates the burden of mental health issues, perpetuating a vicious cycle of poverty and poor mental health.

Social isolation and stigma

In addition, poverty frequently coexists with social isolation and a lack of supportive relationships. Individuals living in poverty often face stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion, leading to feelings of shame and low self-esteem. The absence of a robust support system can worsen mental health conditions, as individuals have limited opportunities to seek emotional support and share their struggles with others. The resulting isolation can contribute to a further decline in mental well-being.

Hopelessness and despair

Further, limited educational opportunities and a lack of job prospects contribute to a sense of hopelessness and despair. Poverty restricts access to quality education and job opportunities, leaving individuals trapped in a cycle of poverty with little hope for a better future. The absence of economic stability can lead to feelings of powerlessness and contribute to mental health issues such as depression. This highlights the importance of addressing poverty as a social determinant of mental health.

Destigmatising mental health and raising awareness

Addressing the complex interplay between poverty and mental health requires a comprehensive approach. Governments and policymakers must prioritise poverty reduction strategies that address the social, economic, and psychological dimensions. This includes measures such as increasing access to quality healthcare and mental health services, promoting social inclusion, reducing stigma, and improving educational opportunities for all.

Further, destigmatising mental health issues and raising awareness about the link between poverty and mental health is crucial. Communities must come together to foster supportive environments that encourage individuals to seek help without fear of judgement or discrimination. Organisations and NGOs dedicated to mental health must also advocate for policies that tackle poverty and its impacts, ensuring that mental health support is accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Poverty and mental health are intricately intertwined. Poverty contributes to increased stress levels, limited access to healthcare, social isolation, and limited educational and job prospects, all of which have profound impacts on mental well-being. Recognising and addressing this connection is essential to break the cycle of poverty and improve mental health outcomes for millions of individuals worldwide.
