Modules on social cohesion, law and ethics are to be introduced for students in Grades 12 and 13 under the Government’s proposed education reforms.

The Subcommittee on Education Reforms, chaired by Prime Minister and Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya, recently met in Parliament to review progress on the General Education and Preschool Education Reforms scheduled to be implemented from next year (2027).

As the initial step in implementing the General Education Reforms, activity books, teacher guides and modules required for Grades Two and Six have been prepared, while teacher training programmes are currently being conducted.

The meeting also revealed plans to include seven subjects, including History and Aesthetic Studies, for the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level Examination, while vocational education is to be introduced for Grades 10 and 11.

A series of awareness programmes on the new education reforms will also be conducted in the future.

Meanwhile, a National Preschool Education Policy has been formulated to formalise preschool education. Work is underway on the registration of preschools, preparation of curricula and teacher guides, and implementation of teacher training programmes.
