A motion seeking a Special Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate the death of tusker Kawanthissa was submitted to the Speaker on 23 October.

Initiated by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and signed by Opposition MPs, the motion calls for an inquiry into the circumstances of the tusker’s death and whether all relevant parties fulfilled their responsibilities.

Premadasa also called for measures to protect Sri Lanka’s remaining tusker population and proposed that the committee be co-chaired by representatives of both the Government and the Opposition.
