Former Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake has been granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara ordered his release on two surety bails of Rs. 2 million each. The bail application was made by President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa.

Ekanayake had been arrested and remanded over the alleged misuse of public funds in a case involving former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The case relates to a complaint alleging that more than Rs. 16.2 million in public funds were misappropriated to finance a private foreign visit to the United Kingdom in 2023 to attend his wife’s graduation ceremony.

Ranil Wickremesinghe was also arrested in connection with the case and later released on bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
