Chicken prices soar: Canteen food prices to remain unchanged

The All Ceylon Canteen Owners’ Association (ACCOA) said even though the price of poultry meat (chicken) has increased in the market, the price of canteen food will not be increased.

ACCOA President, Asela Sampath told The Daily Morning yesterday (30), that with the unfair increase in the price of chicken, not only restaurants, but those taking orders for catering services and hotels too are in big trouble. “The price of chicken has increased more than the price of mutton. Even though the current price of chicken has hiked to Rs. 1,680 a kilo, the price of canteen food will remain unchanged,” he said.

The ACCOA requested the Government to maintain canteen services as a welfare service for the people, and give a satisfactory price for poultry meat.

Meanwhile, fish prices in the market have also increased.Consumers say even though the Government has set a price for eggs, it is still sold at market prices ranging Rs. 53–55.
