Thirteen individuals, including a woman, have been arrested by the Police after allegedly attempting to travel to India by sea. The group had reportedly attempted to reach India by sea but was turned back to Sri Lanka by Indian Customs officials. Following their return to Sri Lanka, the suspects were taken into custody by officers of the Immigration and Emigration Department and handed over to the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Police for further investigations, on 6 September. The group comprised one woman and 12 men. The suspects are residents of Karunkodithivu, Mampitiya, Medawachchiya, Haldummulla, Wellawaya, Monaragala, Mavadichenai, Balangoda, Trincomalee, Badulla and Pottuvil. The suspects are currently being detained at the KKS Police Station and were scheduled to be produced before court yesterday (7).
