  • Reports called from line Mins. following US indictment

The Cabinet of Ministers stated that they will hold discussions on the status of Adani projects in Sri Lanka following allegations.

“We will take it seriously and hold discussions on the future of our projects with the Adani Group,” Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said. “We have called for reports from the various ministries involved with the projects; however, we have not yet taken a decision.”

Dr. Jayatissa confirmed that while there is no timeframe on the discussions being carried out with regard to Sri Lanka’s Adani projects, the Government is taking the allegations into consideration.

Attempts to contact the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption proved futile.

The United States (US) International Development Finance Corporation, which is partially funding the Colombo Port terminal in Sri Lanka, is employing due diligence on the project after the allegations against the Adani Group Chairperson by the US Department of Justice came to light. The US agency mentioned that it has not concluded a final agreement on the loan worth Dollars ($) 500 million to the conglomerate yet. The project is partly owned by the Adani Group. After the allegations made in an indictment order against Gautam Adani and six of his associates, it is not just the Chairperson and the Group that is under the scanner but also its various multinational projects. Adani is charged with fraud in a $ 250 million bribery scheme. The contract to develop the Colombo Port was signed by the Adani Group in 2021. The project is a joint venture with a Sri Lankan private company and the Ports Authority where the Adani led company holds a majority stake. Apart from this, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had promised during election campaigns that if he comes to power, he will reconsider approval given to the Adani Group’s wind power project in Mannar by the previous Government.
