- EC finalising amendments to laws governing President, Parliament, PC Polls
- To incorporate proposals from political parties and polls observers
- Reforms to LG Authorities and Campaign Finance laws to follow thereafter
Election Commission (EC) Chairperson R.M.A.L. Rathnayake said yesterday (25) that amendments to several election-related laws except for the Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Act, No. 30 of 2023 and the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act, No. 3 of 2023 have already been prepared as part of their effort to reform the electoral framework.
Speaking to The Daily Morning, he said: "We have prepared amendments to legislation governing the Presidential, General/Parliamentary and Provincial Council (PC) Elections and are currently working on finalising those proposals."
Rathnayake added that amendments have not yet been prepared for the Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Act and the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act, noting that they would also be prepared soon.
“We hope to discuss these proposals with political party secretaries and election observers before presenting them to the Parliament. If they raise concerns or make suggestions, we will consider them and incorporate suitable proposals into the final recommendations,” he added.
Sri Lanka’s electoral system is governed by several key laws, including the Presidential Elections (Special Provisions) Act, No. 2 of 1981, the Parliament Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981, the PCs Elections Act, No. 2 of 1988, and the Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Act, which regulate procedures ranging from voter registration and nominations to polling and vote counting.
