128 Wild elephant deaths reported in Sri Lanka this year

The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) says 128 wild elephant deaths have been reported between January 1 and May 15.


Causes include shootings, electrocution, explosives, falls into wells, poisoning and train collisions.


The highest number of deaths was reported from the Eastern Region, with cases also recorded in Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura.


During the same period, 35 human deaths due to elephant attacks were also reported.
