Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. has called for applications from experts to conduct an international feasibility study as part of plans to expand the country’s gas storage terminals amid efforts to strengthen supply stability.

Speaking to The Sunday Morning, Litro Gas Lanka and Litro Gas Terminal Lanka Ltd. Chairman Channa Gunawardana said that the company was at the initial stage of the expansion process at present.

“Prior to building the terminals, an international feasibility study is needed. An expert or a group of experts will have to make recommendations on where to expand and how much to expand,” he said.

Gunawardana added that applications were now being called from qualified experts to undertake the study, marking the first formal step in the planned expansion of storage facilities.

The move comes as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s gas storage capacity, which has been identified as a key factor in preventing supply disruptions. Authorities have previously noted that the country has limited Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage capacity, making expansion of terminal facilities essential to improve supply security.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development stated recently that existing gas suppliers continued to meet domestic demand, with Litro playing a dominant role in the market.

According to Deputy Minister R.M. Jayawardana, Litro currently handles about 80% of the country’s LPG supply and distributes around 33,000 MT of LPG each month.

He also noted that Litro had issued approximately five million domestic gas cylinders, forming the bulk of the cylinders in circulation nationwide.

Jayawardana further stated that additional gas stocks had also been released recently by Litro to stabilise distribution following disruptions reported in several parts of the country, where consumers experienced delays in cylinder availability and long waiting times at distribution points.
