Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama has been attacked in the Mathugama area on Thursday (3) afternoon.

The assault had taken place following an argument that had taken place between Welgama and a retired school principal at a vegetable shop in Mathugama located on the Mathugama-Aluthgama main road. Police has said that the retired principal, who is a resident of Agalawatte, was taken into custody following the assault incident.

Welgama was reportedly admitted to hospital for treatment following the assault. Hospital sources had said that Welgama’s condition was not serious.

However, Police has said that the argument was based on a land dispute and that the matter has now been amicably resolved.

Welgama was also attacked last year during the mayhem on 9 May and was hospitalised due to injuries sustained during the attack.
