- Vajira’s entreat to Mohan bears fruit
The organisers of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) Season Six in official partnership with the IPG Group, who serve as the event rights holder for the tournament presented a cheque for Rs 1.3 million to the Sri Lanka Netball Federation (SLNF) recently.
The cheque to this effect was handed over to the Chairperson of the SLNF Vajira Netticumara by Chief Organiser of the LPL Anil Mohan who is also the Founder and CEO of the IPG Group during the LPL Player Draft held at Cinnamon Life in Colombo on Monday (1).
The presentation took place following a request made to Mohan by the Netball Federation head towards strengthening the coffers of district associations affiliated to the SLNF.
When contacted Vajira Janaki Netticumara stated that she was extremely grateful to the LPL Chief Organiser cum IPG Group CEO Anil Mohan for making a generous financial donation to the federation, which she feels would enable district associations to turn a new lease of life.
“The moment I became the Netball Federation president, he (Anil Mohan) congratulated me,” the SLNF chair said.
“He also stressed that if the need arose he was willing to help netball financially. We faced difficulties to conduct district tournaments through our affiliated associations for want of sufficient funds. Also due to this situation the emergence of talented netball players from district level is also not at a satisfactory level. Afterwards I requested Anil Mohan to help us out in this regard and he consented and for that I would like to convey our deep gratitude to him.”
Netticumara also thanked Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage for being a willing supporter for netball since she assumed the administrative top post of the local governing body early this year.
“I must also commend the Minister here for being a ready supporter of netball, from the day I came into office,” she added.
“If not for the Minister and his Ministry officials, netball in Sri Lanka will struggle to turn a corner as the cost factor is extremely high. So on behalf of the players, I must thank the subject Minister as well for his contributions.”
Among those in attendance were Sports Minister Gamage, Cricket Transformation Committee head Eran Wickramaratne and the Director of the LPL Samantha Dodanwela.
