Sri Lanka hosts Independence Day reception in South Africa

The Sri Lanka High Commission in South Africa hosted a memorable celebration to mark the 78th Independence Day of Sri Lanka on 5th February at Sri Lanka House. 


This event marked a significant occasion, being the first Independence Day celebration in five years, and brought together a diverse group of attendees.


The gathering included diplomats, Sri Lankan expatriates living in South Africa and other accredited nations, as well as senior government officials, including representatives from South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation. The event was characterized by a warm display of Sri Lankan culture and heritage.


Guests enjoyed authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, offering a taste of the country’s rich culinary traditions.


A notable feature of the evening was the entrance lottery, where cultural artifacts such as brass oil lamps, silver plates engraved with the Sandakada Pahana (moonstone), traditional masks, and wood carvings representing the grand Perahera Festival were distributed as gifts, symbolizing Sri Lanka’s cultural identity. In his address, High Commissioner Air Chief Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa (Retd.) underscored the national vision of “Rebuild Sri Lanka,” emphasising themes of unity, resilience, and active international engagement to foster development and progress.
