Former Parliamentarian Sajin De Vass Gunawardena was remanded until 24 March by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday (9), following his arrest by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption over allegations of illegally accumulating assets worth Rs. 243.8 million.

Vass Gunawardena was taken into custody by CIABOC officials when he arrived at the Commission yesterday morning to record a statement.

He had been summoned to provide a statement in connection with an ongoing investigation into the alleged accumulation of assets through unlawful means. Following his arrest, he was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, which ordered that he be remanded until 24 March.

The Commission is conducting investigations into claims that the former MP had amassed assets which are suspected to have been acquired illegally.

Further proceedings in the case are scheduled to take place later this month.
