The construction work on two flyovers in Kohuwala and Getambe that was temporarily put on hold has resumed following the receipt of the $ 2.9 billion assistance by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in March, The Sunday Morning learns.

It is learnt that the construction work on the two flyovers has once again been resumed by local contractors in full capacity and the funds are being released by the Government of Hungary.

According to the Road Development Authority (RDA), around 80% of the construction work of the Kohuwala flyover had already been completed by the time it was suspended temporarily due to the economic crisis in the country and initial work had been undertaken on the Getambe flyover too.

Speaking to The Sunday Morning, RDA Director General L.V.S. Weerakoon said the construction work on the two flyovers was currently underway at full capacity and the work on the flyover at Kohuwala would be completed soon.

“Construction work saw a little delay during the prevailing economic crisis, but has now resumed at full capacity. The loan was approved several years ago and the construction company initially commenced work on the Kohuwala flyover, of which nearly 80% had been completed. There was a delay in commencing work on the Getambe flyover, but it has now resumed,” he added.

Sri Lanka secured a concessionary loan worth $ 57 million from the EXIM Bank of Hungary in 2020 for the construction of the two flyovers in Getambe and Kohuwala to ease traffic congestion in the respective areas.
