Health authorities in Sri Lanka have expressed concern over a rising number of cases of colon and rectal cancers among individuals aged 30 to 50, reflecting a global trend.
These cancers were more prevalent among those over 50, but recent data indicates a significant shift, with more young adults being diagnosed.
Speaking at a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau, Dr. Hasarali Fernando, a Consultant Community Physician of the National Cancer Control Programme, highlighted that this emerging pattern poses a serious public health challenge.
She stressed the importance of early screening, timely diagnosis, and increased public awareness to address this growing threat.
Dr. Fernando urged individuals to be attentive to early symptoms and to seek medical advice without delay.
