Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland has died at the age of 24, the team announced. 

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed Kneeland died on Wednesday(06) night (US time) from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police pursuit in Texas.

The DPS tried to stop Kneeland for a traffic violation before losing sight of his vehicle. 

He was later found dead in a nearby porta-potty. 

Police dispatch audio revealed concerns that Kneeland, who had a history of mental illness, was armed and intended to "end it all." 

The National Football League (NFL) offered condolences, and the Cowboys stated their thoughts were with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.
