Prime Minister (PM) Harini Amarasuriya emphasised that women’s political, economic, and social rights must be actively realized in everyday life, not just on paper.
Speaking as the Chief Guest at the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration in Matara, she urged the government to create an environment where women can thrive.
She highlighted the importance of safeguarding rights won through women’s struggles and promoted initiatives like supporting women entrepreneurs and introducing a National Care Policy to recognise unpaid contributions.
The Prime Minister called for women to lead efforts for peace and humanity amid global crises.
The event also saw awards presented to 25 successful women entrepreneurs, with senior officials and ambassadors in attendance, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s commitment to women’s empowerment.
