Seven Grade 7 students, including five boys and two girls, were hospitalized after tasting a chemical substance in a Dambulla school laboratory.

Police said the children mistook the red-colored chemical, used for detecting iron, for chili powder.

The lab had reportedly been broken into during the school holidays. All affected students are receiving treatment at the Dambulla Base Hospital
