A seminar titled “Freedom of Expression and Emerging Challenges” was held on the 24th of July, jointly organized by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and the Media Law Forum. BASL President's Counsel Rajeev Amarasuriya opened the event, stressing the need to protect freedom of expression in a democratic society.
The event featured in-depth legal analyses by experts including Viranjana Herath and PC Jagath Wickramanayake, covering Sri Lanka’s compliance with international standards like the ICCPR and exploring domestic laws such as the Online Safety Act. The seminar also tackled the tension between national security and free speech.
Attorney-at-Law Senany Dayaratne concluded with practical approaches for legal reform and digital-age challenges, urging a balanced response to expression rights and competing interests. The event facilitated dialogue among legal professionals, journalists, and civil society leaders on the future of free speech in Sri Lanka.
