An independent group linked to ex-minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage gained control of the Nawalapitiya Urban Council. 

Amal Priyankara was re-elected chairman and K. Sureshwaran as deputy, both with 9 votes. 

The council, with no clear majority, saw Independent Groups 01 and 02 unite to outvote the National People’s Power (NPP)’s nominees.
