The Cabinet has approved the implementation of Phase 2 of the Mahaweli Water Security Investment Program, targeting critical irrigation and water supply improvements in the North Central Province.
The second phase will focus on completing irrigation infrastructure along the Maha Ela and launching a commercial agriculture development initiative with improved water distribution systems. It is expected to benefit major reservoirs, including Hurulu Wewa, Manakattu, Mahakanadarawa, and Nuwara Wewa.
The initiative aims to increase cultivation intensity and provide 40 million cubic meters of drinking water annually, enhancing livelihoods and resilience in the region. The Asian Development Bank (ADB), which funded Phase 1, will support the second phase through a restructured financing approach.
