Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) has selected elite athletes and champion javelin throwers Rumesh Tharanga and Dilhani Lekamge to compete at the Asian Throwing Championships slated to take place in Mokpo, South Korea on Thursday (21) and Friday (22).

Tharanga’s participation could further enhance his performance, while Lekamge’s participation would allow her the opportunity to guarantee direct qualification for the World Athletics Championships scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan from 13-21 September.

Of Sri Lanka’s elite athletes, to date only Tharanga and fellow javelin thrower Sumedha Ranasinghe have managed to earn direct qualification for the men’s javelin throw event ahead of the championships in Tokyo next month.

According to current world javelin throw rankings, Tharanga is ranked seventh with Ranasinghe being placed 10th.
