- SLFP trying to revive grassroots support
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is set to contest the upcoming Local Government (LG) Elections under the symbol of ‘Chair’ as ‘Podujana Eksath Peramuna’ (People’s United Front), according to SLFP National Organiser and former Member of Parliament (MP) Duminda Dissanayake.
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (9), Dissanayake stated that many SLFP members and affiliated groups prefer to contest under the Podujana Eksath Peramuna banner, as it has a history of election victories and appeals to left-wing voters.
He also mentioned that the party is currently working to gain support from its former allies and groups while striving to contest in as many electoral districts as possible. Additionally, he noted that the SLFP is holding meetings across the country to strengthen its grassroots organisation.
Dissanayake further explained that many party members who had previously felt discouraged by recent political developments are now feeling more encouraged by the shortcomings of the current Government. He expressed that this Government lacks the ability to deliver on the mandate it received from the people. Therefore, he believes the upcoming LG Polls will be a turning point in the political landscape of the country.
