Flight services between Colombo and Katunayake were officially launched today (3) with Beira Lake designated as a water aerodrome. 

Operated by Cinnamon Airlines using a Cessna 208, the service aims to expand domestic air travel and boost tourism.

Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Ratnayake highlighted Government support for private operators to extend services to regional airports. 

Regulatory reforms have enabled the resumption of water aerodrome operations, last attempted in 2011–2012.
