03 Sep 2025 | BY Staff Writer

The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced that 15 government hospitals across Sri Lanka will be equipped with new infectious waste incinerators under a project funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The project, which is supported by a 503 million yen grant from the Japanese government, aims to improve medical waste management and safety.

The incinerator at the Trincomalee District General Hospital, which can burn up to 162 kg of waste per hour, will be officially handed over to the public on Friday, 5 September, 2025.

Other hospitals receiving units include teaching hospitals in Ratnapura and Kurunegala, as well as district and base hospitals in various parts of the country.
