Met Dept. warns of possible heavy rain and flooding in Oct-Nov

25 Aug 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Sri Lanka could experience above-average rainfall in October and November due to prevailing El Niño conditions, the Department of Meteorology has warned.

Meteorology Director General Ajith Wijemanna stated that around 30% of Sri Lanka’s annual rainfall normally occurs during these two months, and heavier-than-usual rain could rapidly fill reservoirs and lead to flooding in some areas.

He noted that El Niño effects are expected to intensify during December, January and February.
