- Qualifies for World Athletics C’ships
Aircraftsman Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage made history at the 2025 World Athletic Continental Tournament held in Bhubaneswar, India clinching the gold medal in the Javelin Throw with a stunning distance of 86.50 m, setting a brand new national record.
This remarkable achievement not only brought glory to Sri Lanka but also secured Tharanga’s qualification for the prestigious World Athletics Championships, marking a significant milestone in his sporting career.
His powerful throw has now placed him among the elite javelin throwers on the global stage. Tharanga returned to Colombo on Monday (11) following his monumental triumph.
He was warmly welcomed by representatives from Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA), officials from the Sri Lanka Air Force along with several sports personalities, who gathered to celebrate his momentous achievement and honour his contribution to the nation’s sporting legacy.
