Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa stated that a government unable to manage the country’s prison system cannot rebuild Sri Lanka.

Addressing a gathering in Maligakanda, Borella, he criticised the Government’s handling of recent incidents, including the unrest at Mahara Prison.

Premadasa also claimed that 30–40% of the population is affected by poverty and economic difficulties.
