The total water storage capacity of reservoirs across Sri Lanka currently stands at around 47.3% amid prevailing dry weather conditions, according to the Irrigation Department.

Irrigation Department Director (Water Management) H.M.P.S.D. Herath stated that water levels in major reservoirs managed by the Department are currently at around 34.4%.

Reservoirs in Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts are holding around 20% of their capacity.

However, available water reserves are expected to be sufficient for the remainder of the Yala cultivation season and to meet drinking water requirements until the next rainfall.

The public has been urged to use water sparingly for agricultural and drinking purposes as evaporation losses have increased due to the prevailing hot weather.
