The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has issued a statement condemning attempts by law enforcement and prosecuting authorities to access confidential information held by Attorneys-at-Law in connection with their professional duties.
The BASL warned that such actions undermine the ethical standards and independence of the legal profession, emphasising that attorneys operate under strict confidentiality rules protected by the Supreme Court (SC) Rules and the Evidence Ordinance.
It urged all authorities to respect the role of lawyers, highlighting that any interference threatens citizens’ access to justice and the constitutional rights guaranteed under Article 14(1)(g).
The BASL reaffirmed its commitment to defending the independence and dignity of legal professionals and maintaining a free and fair justice system in Sri Lanka.
