The MSC MARIELLA, one of the world’s largest container ships, has docked at the East Container Terminal of the Colombo Harbour, marking a historic milestone for Sri Lanka's maritime industry.
According to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), the vessel is now officially the largest container ship to ever call at a Sri Lankan port.
Built in 2023, the MSC MARIELLA spans nearly 400 meters in length and has a container capacity of 24,244 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), underscoring Colombo Harbour's capability to handle ultra-large vessels.
The SLPA stated that this visit highlights the harbour’s growing status as a key hub in the Indian Ocean and reflects the success of recent infrastructure upgrades at the East Container Terminal.
The terminal’s advanced equipment, including high-capacity Ship-to-Shore (STS) gantry cranes, ensured smooth operations during the ship’s arrival.
