• Lessons to learn through the swords and sentiments of ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’

‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is a Mani Ratnam movie based on a Tamil language historical fiction novel by Indian author Kalki Krishnamurthy. Simply put, ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is similar to ‘Game of Thrones,’ where one woman aims to bring an end to the Chola dynasty while another aims to bring stability to the era with the crowning of her own capable younger brother.

‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1’ won the hearts of many with its captivating storyline and sweet romances. The sequel titled ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’  has taken this one step further by showcasing the harsh history as well as some of the sacrifices of such prominent historical regal figures.

The movie also does an incredible job of weaving in certain important lessons while still maintaining an entertaining aura that engages the audience throughout. From the importance of loyalty and friendship to the devastating effects of vengeance, ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ drives home the message that these lessons are relevant even in today’s world.

Here are the three lessons one can learn through the story of both ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ movies:

1. The deeper the love, the deeper the hate – The heart-wrenching and tragic love story of the legendary couple from Ponniyin Selvan’ – Aditha Karikalan and Nandini – is sure to leave you with a heavy heart. The mere mention of their names brings forth a flood of emotions and a sense of longing for what could have been. Their story is a testament to the power of love, but also a reminder that not all love stories have a happy ending. 

From their story, we learn that the pain, anger, and resentment that stem from a love gone wrong can cut so deeply that it is hard to see a way out. Despite the pain he carries in his heart from losing his ancestral land, he chooses to remain light-hearted and humorous. This is a lesson we can all learn from – stay focused on your goals and keep a sharp mind, even when facing the most difficult of circumstances.
