The Cabinet has approved the procurement of 20 electrically operated prime movers for the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), in a bid to modernize inter-terminal transport operations and enhance sustainability at Sri Lanka’s major ports.
The decision replaces an earlier plan to buy diesel-operated terminal tractors, aligning with current environmental and operational priorities. Currently, 60 of the 119 existing vehicles are over 20 years old and frequently require repairs.
The Rs. 1,000 million procurement will be conducted through an International Competitive Bidding process and is funded under the SLPA’s capital budget for 2025 and 2026.
The proposal was submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation as part of the Government’s broader push to reduce emissions and improve port efficiency.
