A warning from the roof of the world

When a massive section of hanging glacier sheared away high in the Himalayas at over 5,000 metres, the catastrophic consequences were felt far down the river valleys of Nepal. Millions of tonnes of ice and rock plunged into the gorge below, sending a seismic shockwave across the region before damming the Lhende Khola. What followed was a devastating outburst flood, a torrent of mud, ice, and debris moving with the lethal density of liquid concrete. Bridges vanished, multi-storey buildings were swept away like toy bricks, and entire mountain communities were left shattered. To treat this event as just another sudden, unfortunate natural calamity would be a grave error. It was, in truth, a man-made tragedy.

Glaciologists and climate scientists have been warning for decades that high-altitude mountain ecosystems are on the absolute frontlines of global warming. The Hindu Kush-Himalaya range, often described as the Third Pole because it holds the largest volume of frozen water outside the polar caps, is warming at nearly double the global average rate. Himalayan glaciers have lost more than 20 per cent of their total ice mass over recent decades, leaving fragile ice overhangs suspended precipitously over steep rock faces. Deep permafrost, the subterranean frozen ground that acts as structural glue holding these mountain walls together, is thawing at an unprecedented pace. At the same time, unseasonably warm air temperatures generate surface meltwater that trickles down through deep glacial crevasses. When this water reaches the bedrock below, it creates a pressurised, slick layer that allows vast slabs of ice to slide off precipices. What occurred in Nepal was a textbook example of thermal lubrication and structural mountain collapse driven by systemic warming.

For readers here in Sri Lanka, looking out across tropical coconut groves and warm ocean waves, high-altitude ice collapses might feel distant, almost abstract. Yet geographically separated as we may seem, our fates are bound together by the same delicate global climate machinery. The Himalayan mountain system is the primary water tower of Asia and the fundamental regulator of the South Asian monsoon. The thermal dynamics of those northern peaks dictate the timing, intensity, and distribution of monsoon rains that nourish Sri Lanka’s agricultural heartlands, from our central hills to the rice paddies of the Dry Zone. When the hydrological balance of the northern mountains breaks down, the weather patterns across the Indian Ocean become increasingly chaotic. The unpredictable rainfall, severe flash flooding, and prolonged droughts disrupting our Yala and Maha cultivation seasons are two sides of the very same climate coin.

There is a deep injustice in this unfolding crisis. The nations of South Asia, from the landlocked mountain hamlets of Nepal to the coastal fishing communities of Sri Lanka, contribute a mere fraction of global greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, our people pay the highest price for the industrial appetites of wealthier nations. When a glacier collapses in Nepal or a severe storm surge erodes Sri Lanka’s southern coast, it is the vulnerable, hardworking citizens of our region who shoulder the loss of life, livelihoods, and heritage. The disaster in Nepal must serve as an urgent wake-up call for South Asian leadership to demand meaningful climate justice and international loss-and-damage compensation far more aggressively on the global stage.

Regional cooperation within South Asia has lingered in political paralysis for far too long. If political differences prevent agreement on trade or diplomacy, climate survival must transcend them. We urgently need a unified regional strategy for disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, and resource management. This means sharing real-time satellite data, establishing cross-border early warning systems for glacial outburst floods and extreme atmospheric conditions, and pooling scientific expertise across South Asian universities. Sri Lanka must actively champion these initiatives alongside its regional partners. We cannot wait for the next catastrophe to remind us that natural hazards ignore human borders and diplomatic rivalries.

The tragic loss of life and destruction along the Nepalese border is a preview of what awaits our region if global emissions remain unchecked. The melting peaks of the Himalayas are a mirror reflecting the vulnerability of our own tropical shores. As the waters of the Lhende Khola settle and the displaced families begin the painful task of rebuilding, South Asia must listen to the message echoing down from the mountains. Time is no longer on our side, and inaction is a luxury we can no longer afford.
