26 Jan 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The Department of Railways has launched a new simulator-based training program for newly appointed train drivers, utilizing a state-of-the-art facility at the German Technical Training Institute in Ratmalana.

The training, which commenced today (26), follows an investment of €1.1 million and features a Simulator Cabin, eight Training Desks, and six Observation Desks. The facility aims to improve the quality of training while significantly reducing the training period, which previously exceeded three years.

The advanced simulator system is expected to enhance practical driving skills and accelerate drivers’ readiness for operational duties.

Deputy Minister of Transport Dr. Prasanna Gunasena was present at the launch and was seen testing the new facilities.
