Nishan Duraiappah, Police Chief for the Peel Region in Canada and nephew of slain Jaffna Mayor Alfred Duraiappah, made a personal visit to Sri Lanka last month.
During his visit, Chief Duraiappah met with officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and, upon the ministry's invitation, visited the Sri Lanka Police Headquarters.
He shared his experience with local counterparts on community policing and best practices used by Canadian law enforcement agencies.
Chief Duraiappah began his career with Halton Police in December 1995 and has served in various assignments, including front-line policing, specialized investigations, and Diversity and Community relations.
He was promoted to Deputy Chief of Halton Police in 2015 and appointed Chief of Peel Regional Police in October 2019.
Chief Duraiappah was also appointed to the Order of Ontario in 2022.
During his visit, he traveled to the North of the island, paying tribute to his uncle Alfred Duraiappah, who was slain by terrorists in 1975, and met with Northern religious and community leaders. Chief Duraiappah also attended a charity event.
