In a ceremony held today, High Commissioner of India, H.E. Santosh Jha, handed over a fleet of 134 single cabs, procured under grant assistance of SLR 300 million from Government of India, to Sri Lanka Police in the presence of the President of Sri Lanka, H.E. Anura Kumara Disanayaka.
2. The vehicles aim to strengthen transportation facilities, increase operational efficiency and shorten response times, particularly in challenging terrains, with the overall objective of strengthening maintenance of law and order to enhance safety and comfort of the citizens of Sri Lanka.
3. A MoU for supply of the single cabs was signed in January 2025, in response to a request from Sri Lanka Police. It was among several initiatives undertaken soon after the landmark State Visit of H.E. President Disanayaka to India in December 2024, during which he and Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, acknowledged the transformative impact of India’s development assistance in contributing to the socioeconomic growth of Sri Lanka and agreed to further intensify people-oriented development partnership across key sectors.
4. The proposal for the supply of single cabs for use by Sri Lanka Police coincided with and found inspiration in the objectives related to road safety, timely help to citizens in distress and the maintenance of law and order highlighted by H.E. President Disanayaka in the “Clean Sri Lanka” Mission launched in January 2025.
5. The handing-over ceremony, held today at the Presidential Secretariat, was also attended by Hon. K.M. Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs; Hon. Sunil Watagala, Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs; Mr. D.W.R.B. Seneviratne, Secretary to the Ministry; Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya, Inspector General of Police; Deputy Inspectors General and officers of Sri Lanka Police; and senior officials of the Presidential Secretariat and Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs.
6. The fleet handover marks yet another significant chapter in the multifaceted development partnership between India and Sri Lanka across all major sectors including infrastructure, transportation, health, education, agriculture, fisheries, community development, among others.
