President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, To Lam, who arrived in Sri Lanka on a two-day official visit, is currently addressing the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
The occasion was attended by Members of Parliament, ambassadors, and distinguished guests, highlighting the significance of this diplomatic milestone.
The last foreign leader to address Sri Lanka’s Parliament was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015. The event was marked by elaborate arrangements, including a special parliamentary ceremony and a street parade conducted by the tri-forces, culminating in a warm welcome by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.
President To Lam arrived in Sri Lanka last night on a two-day official visit, accompanied by a delegation of 209 members. Today, he was formally received at the Bandaranaike International Airport before proceeding to Parliament, where he delivered a speech that underscored the growing bond between the two nations.
The visit is taking place at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, extended during his trip to Vietnam in 2025, coinciding with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
The timing is particularly significant as Sri Lanka navigates its path toward economic stability under the current government.
President To Lam’s address reflects Vietnam’s impressive economic growth and its role as a global manufacturing hub. His visit aims to bolster bilateral cooperation, strengthen political ties, and explore new avenues for economic partnership, further cementing the strategic relationship between the two nations.
Following the address, the Parliament is scheduled to debate seven Private Members’ Motions, signaling an active and engaged parliamentary session.
