Sri Lanka records lowest rabies deaths in 2025

Sri Lanka recorded 14 rabies-related deaths in 2025, the lowest annual figure reported in the country.


Athula Liyanapathirana from the Epidemiology Unit stated that 12 deaths were caused by animal bites, mainly from pet dogs.


One death was reported due to an animal scratch and another from an unknown cause.


He noted that several cases involved unvaccinated pets, while others were linked to stray or unidentified animals.
