Opposition and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa has recently made a proposal to address the issue of alcohol and drug use.
He had said at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Narcotics that the country could effectively address the issue of alcohol and drug use if all 225 parliamentarians took a united stand on the matter.
Premadasa had said that all the 225 legislators should agree to rid the country of alcohol, tobacco, and cigarettes, and stand together like how they unanimously opposed the parliamentarian who had tried to smuggle goods from the airport using VIP privileges.
The Opposition Leader had further noted that businessmen engaging in tobacco, alcohol, and cigarettes businesses had in their grasp the officials who prepared the taxes to be imposed on these items and that these businesses managed without getting tax hikes regardless of whatever government that came to power.
“This system can only be broken if all 225 parliamentarians take a united stand,” he had said.
He had further pointed out that many drug peddlers engaged in more drug deals when behind bars than when outside.
