UDA calls for more RFPs despite lack of interest from investors

19 Mar 2023

  • Yet to receive responses for 5 RFPs called in Jan.
  • More RFPs called last week

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has called for Requests For Proposal (RFPs) from potential investors for several new projects, despite a continued lack of investor interest in the previous projects offered by the UDA amidst the current economic crisis.

Speaking to The Sunday Morning Business, UDA Deputy Director General (Real Estate and Land Management) E.A.C. Piyashantha revealed that the UDA was yet to receive any interest from investors for the five premier projects offered in January, which included the theme park development project at Lake Gregory and the high-rise mixed development project on the Chalmers’ Granaries land, despite the fact that the period for the submission of the relevant RFP would expire at the end of this month.

Despite this lack of investor interest, the UDA had called for RFPs for five new projects last week, he revealed.

Elaborating further, he stated: “We haven’t received any RFPs for the projects offered in January and the deadline is at the end of this month. Hopefully, things will improve once the IMF deal is signed. Either way, we have offered five new projects for any interested investors.”

The new projects offered for investment by the UDA include the health-related activities development project at Kirimandala Mawatha, Narahenpita involving a 76.25 perch land offered on a 50-year leasehold basis and the institutional-based mixed development project at Buthgamuwa Cross Road, Rajagiriya which involves a 1.4 hectare land offered on a 99-year leasehold basis.

Similarly, RFPs have been called for a mixed development project at Angoda involving a 111.54 perch land offered on a 99-year leasehold basis. Additionally, tenders have also been called for mixed development projects in Sella Kataragama and Dambulla involving a 140.8 perch and 31.1 perch land respectively, offered on a 30-year leasehold basis.
