More than 2,700 gigawatts of power generation capacity are expected to be added to Sri Lanka’s national grid between 2027 and 2029 through solar, wind and battery storage, Minister of Power and Energy Anura Karunathilaka stated.

Speaking in Parliament today (11), the Minister stated that 1,392 gigawatts are expected from solar power, 370 gigawatts from wind power and 1,000 gigawatts from battery storage.

He noted that rooftop solar generation has increased significantly, with around 2,500 gigawatts currently being generated through such systems.

The Minister stated that surplus electricity generation occurs particularly on Sundays and public holidays due to lower demand. He noted that battery storage systems will allow excess daytime electricity to be stored and supplied during nighttime hours.
