The Electricity Consumers’ Association (ECA) has informed the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to look into an alleged additional charge of 0.84% being imposed when electricity payments are made using electronic bank cards for factories and bulk solar panel accounts.

In a written complaint submitted to the CBSL and the CEB, ECA General Secretary Sanjeewa Dhammika claimed that the charge violated the CBSL’s regulations and urged an immediate investigation. He said that the money collected through this charge should be returned to the public and asked both institutions to provide a full explanation of the total amount collected thus far.

“Notices displaying this charge can be seen at the CEB’s Head Office payment counter even now. This is completely unfair. Our complaint was accepted by the CEB’s Deputy Finance Manager. She said that the matter would be taken up with the Board of Directors through a formal memorandum for a decision,” added Dhammika.

CEB Media Spokesperson Dhammike Wimalaratne was not available for comment.
