The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) of the Opposition, expressed objection to the Government’s recent decision to appoint Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekara to the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Director post.
SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam opined that this decision is aimed at enforcing and ‘bending’ the law according to the Government’s interests in order to arrest and imprison the Government’s rivals. Speaking to the media yesterday (30 June), he further said that the Government’s intention is to appoint to high positions those who obey the Government and that such acts set a bad precedent.
“This decision places the country in a very bad position. The Government is trying to do something wrong here,” he observed, adding that not political parties but Sri Lankans should oppose this decision.
Abeysekara has previously served in the same position.
