All arrangements have been finalized for the election of a new Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, to be held tomorrow at the Senkadagala Buddhist Hall under the supervision of the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs.

Seven candidates are contesting, including Acting Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela and several prominent custodians and professionals.

The elected Diyawadana Nilame will serve until 2035 in accordance with the Temple and Devalagam Ordinance.

A total of 267 individuals, including members of the Maha Sangha, Divisional Secretaries, and devalaya custodians, are eligible to vote. Only official candidates and eligible voters will be allowed inside the selection hall.

Since British rule, 19 individuals have held the position of Diyawadana Nilame of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
