The Gampaha Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to former Minister Douglas Devananda, who was previously remanded in connection with a firearms-related case.
Devananda was admitted to Mahara Prison Hospital on 30 December due to health concerns.
He was initially arrested on December 26 by the CID over an incident involving his personal firearm, which allegedly fell into the hands of organized criminals.
The firearm, issued to Devananda by the Sri Lanka Army in 2001, was recovered after investigations linked to criminal figure ‘Makandure Madush’ in 2019.
The weapon was found concealed near a culvert in Weliweriya.
The CID obtained a 72-hour detention order for further questioning and is investigating additional firearms issued to him, totaling 19 weapons.
Devananda remains in custody until further legal proceedings.
