- Urges Govt. to take proactive measures
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) expressed concerns about a lack of planning concerning economic development under the present Government, noting that although some progressive steps can be observed, their sustainability and results do not seem promising.
This was noted by SJB Executive Committee member Mahesh Senanayake during a press briefing held yesterday (14), where he explained that while anti-corruption measures are necessary, efforts are also required targeting economic growth.
He warned that when economic growth rate declines, the economy contracts while consumption, spending ability and the country’s gross domestic production also decline. When that happens, he added, the overall economy declines. According to him, the country will likely witness a serious economic decline in the next two years.
Moreover, Senanayake pointed out that instead of merely responding to economic challenges, the Government should take proactive measures to develop the economy including through attracting investments and new development projects.
